Gdansk Marina has never been visited by so many racing yachts! Several hundred sailors from twelve European countries came to the town of Motlawa to challenge the Dr Irena Eris ORC European Championship Regatta, which began on Monday, July 24.
In the European Championship, more than 80 yachts will race in the ORC Formula, splitted into three groups. The inauguration ceremony was preceded by a trial race, which provided great opportunity for the sailors to see what they are capable of.
It is the very first time for vast majority of the Crews to sail in the Gdansk Bay. One such team is the female team of the yacht “Tutima”. German sailors moored in the Gdansk marina for several days.
“We’ve never been here before, but we’ve been training in the Bay for four days and we’re not expecting much trouble,” the girls say. – It will be fine. Our goal is to finish in the top 3 in our group.
The inauguration began at 7 pm. Sailors gathered in the regatta village, Szafarnia Street, and they were warmly greeted by The President of Gdnaks
“I welcome your in our city and I apologize for the rainy weather,” the president said. “But honestly I think it is not a problem for you. Welcome to the beautiful city of Lech Wałęsa, freedom and solidarity and I wish all good luck!
There were also representatives of the title sponsor of the Dr Irena Eris championship, as well as Polish Sailing Association, Pomeranian Sailing Association, Pomeranian Marshal’s Office and Offshore Racing Congress.
Wednesday, July 26, will be the first true day for the sailors. Start of the long, off – shore race is scheduled for 11 am. They are expected back in the Marina between 18 to 23. Therefore, results of the Wednesday race will be announced late in the evening.
